Founder at Dynamic Syntax

2019 - Frankfurt

Dynamic Syntax is developing a secure, distributed synchronisation service for structured data. A usage scenario might be two reporters collaborating on a human rights story in a country that's hostile to the press. Neither the application nor service leaks data or meta data.

Enterprise Architect at Mastek

Permanent, 2017 – 2019, Reading

Led the design and development of an Air Movement Operations system for an air logistics service in both connected and disconnected environments. This consisted of modelling and optimising current state processes, designing the solution, planning and driving delivery, and liasing with a C-level board. Also started a mentoring programme to promote senior technical staff into architecture.

Enterprise Architect at Just Retirement

Freelance, 2015 – 2017, London

Developed and maintained a solution consultancy practice, aligning business, client, and information technology needs. This includes:

Designed and managed the agile delivery of a cloud-based underwriting, pricing and activation system for protection in the impaired market.
Provided quality design and implementation guidance which conforms to, and shapes the target architecture and operating model.
Established and operated a Technical Design Authority.
Selected, championed and implemented candidate technologies and frameworks through the creation and maintenance of a technology radar.

Enterprise Architect at the Government Digital Service.

Fixed-term freelance, 2012 – 2014, London

Conducted enterprise analysis, design, planning, and implementation, using a comprehensive approach for the successful development and execution of strategy. Applied architecture principles and practices to guide other Government departments through the business, information, process, and technology changes necessary to execute their strategies.

Led a digital transformation at the Office of the Public Guardian
Reviewed programme documentation, and formulated a migration, operations and support plan for the Digital Marketplace (G-Cloud 6)
Guided a team of architects, business analysts and interaction designers in the design of a secure SOA-based data processing system for the Home Office. This included business process optimisation, integrating multiple distinct data sources and feeds, assessing existing applications, services and infrastructure (Zachman), refreshing end-user devices and peripherals, and evaluating vendor proposals.
Oversaw the proposed cross-government interoperability standard for end-user devices; and evaluated proposed responses from the public and vendors.
Conducted a review of the identity and access platform for government. Project scope included its suitability as a tactical and longer-term strategic replacement for the Government Gateway.
As design authority, I contributed to effort and cost estimation, and managed external stakeholders during a department-wide data strategy exercise using service and data grids, also acting as liaison between government departments.

Solutions Architect at Kainos

Freelance, 2011 – 2012, London

Led the technical operations of Kainos’ London branch. This included technical pre-sales; people management and performance reviews; and solution architecture. I also led the design and cost/effort estimation of a £5m distributed payment system for NHS (Northern Ireland) that validates and processes claims from general practitioners, dental practitioners and pharmacists.

Freelance, 2011, Berlin

Led the design and development of the first Nokia Maps prototype for Windows Phone. Also defined and implemented quality objectives for usability, security, performance, and reliability.

Solutions Architect at Microsoft

Permanent, 2005 – 2010, Reading, Seattle

Engaged with a select set of Microsoft’s blue-chip customers to understand their architecture and security challenges related to the Microsoft application platform -

Articulated architectural differences between competing solutions, and the challenges, approaches and vulnerability mitigations in these products and tools.
Represented Microsoft on the MODAF vendor advisory board
Drove the integration of mechanisms like Chip & PIN challenge/response, and the active requestor identity federation profile into Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager.
Engaged in senior-level decision-maker discussions to resolve conflicts between security, usability and business value, in the context of Microsoft products and technologies.

Designed and managed the implementation of Internet Access to Shared Services, which provides secure, remote access to line-of-business applications on a restricted military network for 10,000 users using potentially compromised devices. The team consisted of on-site and remote Microsoft experts, as well as outsourced industry partners and vendors.

Managed a pool of in- and out-sourced consultants skilled in Microsoft products and technologies. Also, solution architecture and design; elicited customer requirements; estimated and allocated schedules and resources. Contributed to enterprise transformation bids up to GB£ 5 million.

Designed the tariffing engine for the London Underground.

Co-Founder and Technical Lead at Mission Critical

Managed an Internet start-up development team. I also created the architecture and design of a distributed data visualisation and collaboration system, and was the lead developer.

Established and managed a development team, hardware and software for production, test and development environments, and responsible for the architecture, design and implementation of an online shopping mall.

Architect at The Internet Solution

Permanent, 1996 – 1998, Johannesburg

Created South Africa’s first online retail banking website for Nedbank, as well as a claims processing web site for Momentum Health, a leading healthcare provider.

Programmer at Vodac

Freelance, 1994 – 1996, Johannesburg

Designed and developed billing and OSS -related systems within Vodac, including call tariffing, online bill management, and account activation.

Programmer at Computer Answers

Freelance, 1993 – 1994, Johannesburg, Mannheim, Birmingham

Contributed to the development of a cellular call tariffing engine, and Windows based OSS systems deployed throughout Europe and Africa.

Programmer at Pioneer Restaurant Management Systems

Permanent, 1990 – 1993, Johannesburg

Developed and maintained point of sale, stock management, accounting, property management, and hospitality and industrial catering systems. The achievement I'm most proud of in my first job was to single-handedly develop an industrial catering management system for the Johannesburg General Hospital (now called "Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital").

The system allowed users to enter ingredients to construct menus, facilitating menu planning. This in turn lead to wholesale food requisitions for the hospital's suppliers, which reduced meal planning and requisition from 8 staff members, to a single operator.
